WHAT'S IN A NAME?
In English, the name Kuala Lumpur literally means "muddy confluence". Kuala Lumpur was indeed founded around 1857 at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers.
Kuala Lumpur lies on the peninsula Malaysia. South of Malaysia is Singapore. North of Malaysia is Thailand. Kuala Lumpur is located in the Malaysian state of Selangor, in the massive Klang Valley, close to the center (lengthwise) of Peninsular Malaysia, also referred to as West Malaysia. It is roughly halfway between the island of Penang (home to the city of Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Singapore. The big island of Sumatra in Indonesia lies on its right side.
Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, a beautiful, modern and comfortable country. Malaysia has a rich culture because of its melting pot of inhabitants. Malay, Chinese, Indian, Arabic, European, Peranakan and other cultures all attribute and compliment each other. Another advantage of such a cultural mix is that the gastronomic choices are legendary. Noteworthy is, that the public transport is well organized.
Furthermore, the ecological richness is stunning. Malaysia has beautiful beaches (eg Pangor Laut) and pristine waters on the east coast (Pulau Rendang is great for diving and snorkeling). There are also paddy fields, mountains (go to Mount Kinabalu) and even rainforest. Also, a visit to the Cameron Highlands is recommended where you can enjoy a freshly brewed cup of tea on the verdant tea plantations. Or, take a night-time boat tour out of Kuala Selangor to see a firefly lit sky. Another good idea is to rent a bicycle and explore Sekinchan.
KUALA LUMPUR CITY
Kuala Lumpur is a modern city with a cosmopolitan city center. Be sure to visit the tallest twin towers in the world, where you can enjoy spectacular city views from the 421 meter-high observation deck and sky bridge. While there, be sure to also visit the Merdeka Square and Royal Selangor Club or one of the shopping malls, China town, and Little India.
Kuala Lumpur has a vibrant nightlife. Therefore, you best start with boulevard Changkat Bukit Bintang and then proceed to an establishment of your choice, a chic bistro, trendy rooftop lounge or dance club, there are plenty!
In conclusion, Malaysia has it all, beautiful nature, fascinating cultures and tantalizing gastronomy. Therefore we underwrite the slogan: Malaysia, truly Asia!
