WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Colonists of the Dutch Republic first founded New York City as a trading post, back in 1624. They called it New Amsterdam in 1626. Later on, in 1664, the English gained control over the city and it's surroundings. The lands were granted to the brother of King Charles II of England, named Duke of York. Hence it's new name: New York. Or New York City (NYC) as to avoid any confusion with the State New York.

New York is a state in the north east of the United States of America. New York City is a city in the south of the state of New York. It is located 40.71 latitude and -74.01 longitude and it is situated at elevation 57 meters above sea level. NYC consists of 5 separate counties in the New York State: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens & Staten Island. The counties merged together into a single city in 1898. New York City has a population of 8,175,133 making it the biggest city in New York.

MUSEUMS:

Fifth Avenue’s ‘Museum Mile’, a line up of the world’s greatest cultural institutions. Art museums: the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters, the Frick Collection, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Gagosian Gallery and more. The American Museum of Natural History is also worth a visit.

SHOPPING:

Fifth Avenue and the stylish Madison Avenue: Fifth Avenue is home to shopping icons like Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany & Co., along with high-end fashion labels like Gucci and Versace. Just along Madison Avenue there are dozens of designer boutiques.

The Museum of Modern Art is within walking distance. A somewhat longer walk away is the bustling entertainment and shopping hub of Times Square and the Broadway Theatre District.

RESTAURANTS:

to many to name them all, but we highlight "Boulod". Described as an Upper East Side treasure, Café Boulud is a more relaxed version of uber-chef Daniel Boulud’s famous flagship restaurant, Daniel. The haute nouvelle French cuisine at Café Boulud is as stylish as its location and tends to attract as many locals as hotel guests, along with the rich and famous. Bar Pleiades, another Boulud entity, has an extensive wine list and has its nibbles supplied by Café Boulud. Guests interested in art and design can sit back in the Coco Chanel-inspired Art Deco bar and admire the William Kentridge and Richard Serra paintings on the walls. Les Pleiades, the legendary art world watering hole, once occupied the space where this bar is now.

Airport

John F. Kennedy International Airport or JFK Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK). JFK, in Queens (at the south end of the Van Wyck Expressway), primarily handles international flights.

LaGuardia Airport (IATA: LGA), also in Queens (on the Grand Central Parkway), mainly handles domestic flights. If you're flying in from anywhere in the U.S., chances are you'll come through here. Particular exceptions include Continental Airlines.

Newark Liberty International Airport (IATA:EWR) in Newark, New Jersey, handles both domestic and international flights. It's a bit further from the city than the other two airports, but it is generally less crowded and has more modern facilities.

Teterboro (IATA: TEB, ICAO: KTEB) is located in Teterboro, New Jersey. It is only 19 km from midtown Manhattan, which makes this airport very popular for private and corporate aircraft. It is not a commercial airport because of its 45,000 KG weight limit.

New York City has a humid subtropical climate, with cold winters and hot, moist summers. The city's coastal location ensures that winters (December to February) are not as cold as inland cities on the same latitude, and daytime temperatures generally stay above freezing point but average lows drop to 27°F (-3°C). Snow is common in winter, but the amount varies, and winter rain is common. Spring in New York is pleasantly warm, and the weather heats up to high temperatures of around 77°F (25°C) by mid-May. Summers (June to August) are generally hot and humid, with average highs hitting 84°F (29°C). The best time to travel to New York is in autumn, when temperatures are mild, days are sunny and humidity not too high.
